Are You Suffering From OCD?

You find we all suffer from some form of Obsessive Disorder. As simple as checking a couple of time the fridge door is shut.

OCD is ranked in the top ten of the most disabling illnesses of any kind, in terms of lost earnings and diminished quality of life.

OCD is believed to be a genetically-based problem with behavioural components, and not psychological in origin. Obsessive-compulsive disorder is common. Sufferers are thought to have lower levels of serotonin than the general population.

Many Sufferers are convinced that something bad is going to happen and they will be responsible. A common fear in OCD is that ‘thinking it will make it happen’.

OCD is characterized by obsessive thoughts, impulses, or images and compulsions (overt or mental rituals) that are difficult to suppress and take a considerable amount of time and energy away from living your life, enjoying your family and friends or even doing your job or school work.

Doctors and researchers are divided on what causes OCD but many believe OCD is the result of abnormal brain circuitry function. OCD is never cured, only managed. A common fear in OCD is that ‘thinking it will make it happen’. The most common type of medication used for OCD is a selective-serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI).

OCD is slightly more common in women than in men. Research does not suggest that Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is inherited; however, there are some genes that may play a part in its development. Medical researchers have shown that OCD is a brain disorder that is caused by incorrect information processing.
