God Gift Wrapped

This God,
This higher power thing.
Well I found,
It didn’t sit quite right.

Well now I see,
It’s an offering.
It’s the key to the cell.
That you’re locked in.

Sure you could run,
Why not?
Go and have a little more fun?
That isn’t going to hurt no one (is it?)

But I ask you,
If offered a box; all gift wrapped.
Bow and all.
Would you turn it away?

Personally, I’d open it.
See what gifts coming my way.
But hell, you’ll be surprised.
There is nothing inside.

But, accepting the gift.
A simple act,
Such a simple act,
Begins a journey, a mystery.

The box is a vessel to create,
A god, higher power
To which you can relate.
Empty box not such a shit gift now?

Fill it a day at a time, with acts and deeds.
Greater ones than you’d normally succeed.
The little things and ideas,
That once a day recovery guides you to.

After all isn’t there high power,
In the guidance of recovery?
Not from yourself.
The potential of yourself.

Don’t take a drink today?
Put it in the box, it’s a gift.
Don’t take a drug today?
Put it in the box, it’s a gift.
Help a random stranger,
Because it feels good?
Put it in the box.

Help someone else,
Not drink of drug today?
Put it in the box.
By losing the self-will of yourself,
You gain the potential of selflessness.
Accept each small miracle,
A day at a time. Wake tomorrow, do the
same.

Now to one final question?
That potential of self, those small miracles.
Self-will you say? I refute.
That’s being guided by a power greater that
you.

Then one day,
Maybe not so far away,
You’ll have a gift wrapped empty box.
To give to someone yourself one day.
